Eva Mendes has one of the most alluring faces in Hollywood. Although she has her pick of designer clothes she is often spotted in vintage dresses, both on and off the red carpet.

The actress recently partnered with New York & Company to create a fashion line, which will be called Eva by Eva Mendes. The line will be rolled out across 519 US stores later this year.

How the 1940s screen siren changed fashion

The 1940s saw the birth of film noir and the femme fatale. Hollywood stars like Lauren Bacall, Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth redefined the way women behaved on screen.

Fashion embraced the vampy silhouettes of film noir heroines as well as the masculine tailoring of the feisty adventuress. On the one hand you had the escapism of Hollywood sirens draped in silk - an incredibly expensive fabric during wartime - and on the other, the heroism of strong, fearless women in tailored suits and shoulder pads.

The 'novelty print' that was ubiquitous on the AW12 runways was first introduced in the wartime decade to make the most of rationed fabric.
